Self-proclaimed "men's portal" AskMen.com profiles Harry Potter author JK Rowlingopens in new window, starting from her paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle in the mid 1990's to her current richer-than-the-Queen status.

Growing up, she excelled in school, especially in foreign languages and English, often finding herself at the top of her class. Years later, her bookish demeanor would even inspire her beloved Harry Potter character, Hermione Granger.

One day, in 1990, while stuck on a delayed train between Manchester and London, she got the idea that would change the face of children's literature forever; she thought of writing a story about a young broken down orphan who turns out to be an exceptionally gifted wizard.

The rest is, as they say, history, of course.
