In a brief interview
with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix director David Yates, he comments on the politics of the movie and mentions that "Professor Umbridge is quite damaged as a person."
After reading the book Yates says:
And it's probably the most emotional of all the books. As I read the book, suddenly, I tuned into the kind of thing I have always been drawn to.
