Over 23,000 readers, aged five to 17, voted the Harry Potter series as their favorite book in a poll in Australia. The Potter series was counted as a single book for the purpose of the poll, followed by The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Dave Fenlon, general manager of Angus & Robertson, who conducted the poll, was shocked by the huge response and the fact that a fair number of classics were included on the the final list.
I'm absolutely amazed, to be brutally honest. It was just way in excess of my expectations. I would never have considered To Kill a Mockingbird would get into a kids' poll. Pride and Prejudice was another shocker.
The results of the poll were released this morning at a celebration hosted by the voice of Bart Simpson, Nancy Cartwright.
