After the press ran wild with a rumor that director Mira Nair had been offered the helm of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, contradicting statements were made over the weekend in various interviews.

To Independent.co.ukopens in new window, Nair said:

"I've been so busy that I haven't even had a chance to read the book. I've read the first two, but I haven't read number five. Obviously it's a fantastic opportunity... but I can't tell you yet if I have the mettle for it. The books are a big favourite in my house, though... my son loves them; I think JK Rowling is amazing."

She told the Hindustan Timesopens in new window:

Right now it's too early to talk about it. I don't know how it got out on the websites. I have to sit with them and work out the dates. Until then I am forbidden from talking about it.

Despite these new statements, it's interesting to note that Nair has never denied an offer was made.
