The cutting edge of ignorance

You've probably noticed that there are an awful lot of people out there who claim the Harry Potter books are pure evil, and that JK Rowling has written them solely for the purpose of leading today's children down the primrose path to none other than...[cue drum roll]...Satan!

After all, as David Bay points out repeatedly on his website The Cutting Edgeopens in new window, green is Satan's favorite color, which he offers as proof positive that JK Rowling is attempting to condition today's children to Mind Control by using that particular color in her books. As psychology and mathematics senior Fletcher Christensen advises in his columnopens in new window in the Oklahoma Daily, "never trust someone else to do your thinking for you."

Bay seems to take particular issue with J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. In one fascinating exposé, he reveals how the frequent use of color, any color, demonstrates that, "Rowling is following pure Satanism in creating the Harry Potter books." The reasoning is a bit circuitous, but I'll try to summarize it.

The zodiac and the ancient Celtic calendar both associate colors with each month. These colors may be used to facilitate witchcraft. So when Rowling writes about a character having maroon robes, since maroon is sort of like purple, it demonstrates the character's connection to the Druidic month of Huath.

Circuitous, indeed - personally I'm inclined to view Bay's arguments as being not only weak and pointless, but deliberately misleading. If you've ever wondered why there are so many people who claim that Harry Potter is evil, but have never bothered to actually read the books, a brief study of The Cutting Edge's articles on Harry Potteropens in new window may help to explain why.

A few examples of David Bay's insights, beginning with the article Fletcher Christensen refers to in his column:

MAJOR DISCOVERY IN HARRY POTTER BOOKS! USE OF VIVID COLORS NOW UNDERSTOOD AND THEIR MYSTERY UNRAVELED.opens in new window

Subtitle: Author Rowling uses the most vivid colors imaginable in her Harry Potter novels. These colors are discovered to originate from the old Satanic Druid religion, and play a significant role in Ritual Magic. This discovery is proof positive of the Satanism of Harry Potter novels, but its effect on your child will shock you!

We feel constrained to warn you also not to take this material lightly, for it is quite possible these Harry Potter novels are conditioning children to Mind Control. Certainly, such conditioning might answer the question as to why tens of millions of kids are so fanatic about Potter books!

Or could it be that tens of millions of kids enjoy reading the Harry Potter novels simply because they're a good read?

Another example of Bay's thought processes:

HARRY POTTER'S CHAMBER OF SECRETS DEPICTS KILLING, CUTTING UP, AND STEWING HUMAN BEINGS!opens in new window

Subtitle: To make a Restorative Potion, humans are killed, cut up, and stewed! Chuck Colson, Dr. James Dobson, and Christianity Today either have never read the books they have told Christian parents are all right for their kids to read, or they have been misleading us!

While [Mandrakes] certainly look like fully formed human babies, they are presented as NOT human, but only the root system of the Mandrake plant. I am reminded of the nonsensical argument put forth by the Abortion Rights slaughterers that the baby forming within the mother's womb is not really human, but only tissue matter they call a "fetus".

How disgusting, how vile, and how evil this part of Harry Potter truly is! In Potter's White Magic Witchcraft, we now see human sacrifice occurring, even though we get email constantly from White Magic practitioners -- like Wiccans -- who protest mightily that they do NOT practice human sacrifice. Here, we see that this type of human sacrifice is exceedingly important to the operation of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry specifically and of Witchcraft generally.

Furthermore, once these student witches and wizards graduate, they will enter the Muggles world to live their lives. When they are called upon to perform this Restorative Potion, they will be forced to resort to real human sacrifice in the real world!"

Of course, anyone who hasn't read the Harry Potter books might form a decidely negative view, just from reading this misleading article - which is, without a doubt, Bay's intent.

And speaking of misleading articles...

HARRY POTTER -- HOGWART'S SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY'S REQUIRED BOOK LIST FOR START OF SECOND YEARopens in new window

Subtitle: Public Schools are now including Harry Potter books on their required reading lists; therefore, we find it highly interesting the types of books students at Hogwarts are required to read. What kids love they copy, so the types of subjects Harry Potter is learning is what your child will be interested in learning.

List of Books a Second-Year Student Will Require [p. 43-44]

1. The Standard Book of Spells , Grade 2

2. Break With A Banshee - Dictionary Definition of a Banshee: "A female spirit in Gaelic folklore [Witchcraft] believed to presage a death in the family by wailing outside the house."

3. Gadding With Ghouls - Dictionary Definition of a Ghoul: "1. One who delights in what is revolting, macabre, or loathsome. 2. A grave robber; 3. A malevolent [evil] ghost; an evil spirit … or demon who is supposed to plunder graves and feed on corpses." The word, "gadding", once defined, casts even more revealing light upon the truth of Harry Potter. The dictionary definition is "to roam about aimlessly or restlessly; to go about in search of pleasure or entertainment." Therefore, Harry Potter and his friends were in Hogwarts school to learn how to "roam about restlessly in search of pleasure or entertainment in the company of demons who plunder graves and feast on the corpses."!

This is the overall theme of the entire Harry Potter books, and Christians are supposed to allow their children to read this stuff straight out of the Pit of Hell?
