Fiona Shaw has been described as a 'formidable' actress at her height and continues to amaze many with her superb degree of acting.
When Fiona Shaw walked on stage at the National in 1995 as Richard II, the world's press heralded the new queen of British theatre. Articulate and often described as "formidable", it was said that she was "guaranteed to fill any West End theatre". But the public saw less and less of Shaw. Within a few years, Shaw was on a tour with her director, Deborah Warner, with their adaptation of The Waste Land, which took them around the world. In 2000, their Abbey Theatre production of The Waste Land toured London, Dublin and New York, where it stayed for months. "Britain's foremost actress" was everywhere but in Britain.
