The artist behind the American Harry Potter volumes is selling a few sketches to raise money for Smile Network, a nonprofit that sends doctors to Mexico to provide reconstructive surgeries and health services to children with birth defects:
GrandPré doesn't own the rights to works used by Scholastic Inc., the publisher of the American editions of Harry Potter. "But if I have sketches I've done for other things, those are mine," she said.
There is something phallic -- with either wings or feathers? -- around Harry's neck. Must be something mystical. "I heard that you maybe thought it was something else," GrandPré said Wednesday, speaking the last two words in up-speak. Adding a playful "Hmm," GrandPré said, "It could be. It's whatever you think it is. Art's all about interpretation."
