The latest Harry Potter novel has become the first book in English ever to be No. 1 on France's best seller list.

More than 41,000 copies have been sold in France, according to Ipsos polling institute. Ruth Baxter, assistant manager at the English-language bookstore WH Smith in Paris, said a lot of French people who bought the book didn't appear to be bilingual. "I have never seen anything like that in 12 years," she said of the sales.

The French translation of the fifth novel about teenage sorcerer Harry Potter's adventures will only appear on Dec. 3.
