Upon opening Wednesday, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince raked in $58.18 million in the U.S. ($22.2 million at midnight) and another $45.85 million internationally, for a one-day grand total of $104 million (and a new record).
Some quotes from the bigwigs:
Alan Horn, President and Chief Operating Officer, Warner Bros., stated, "Quite simply, we owe this record-breaking opening to the remarkable fans who have stood by us and who stood in line to be among the first to see 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.' We thank them again for their patience and we hope they agree with us that the film was well worth the wait."
Jeff Robinov, President of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, added, "Everyone at Warner Bros. joins me in congratulating the cast and filmmakers who have made another worthy addition to the amazing Harry Potter film franchise and are already hard at work on the next film."
Sue Kroll, President of Worldwide Marketing, Warner Bros. Pictures, remarked, "From our earliest screenings, the response to 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' has been overwhelming, and we have been inspired by the enthusiasm generated by the film. As the movies have gotten bigger and better, it has been a wonderful challenge to create bigger and better marketing campaigns to excite Harry Potter fans and create new ones. We are delighted that this latest film seems to have done both on a global level."
Producer David Heyman said, "We are so grateful to Jo Rowling, whose books are the foundation of our success. We share this with our remarkable team—director, writer, cast and crew—with whom I am privileged to work every day and whose ambition for the films never ceases to amaze me. Thanks also to our friends at Warner Bros. and especially to our countless Harry Potter fans around the world for their support."

Wow, that's quite a haul. Now I don't think that it's going to match Dark Knight's massive box office total, but it might just pass PS/SS.

Well thought so that that boycott would result in anything. But I kept from going on Wednesday, so I consider my part done.
I just hope WB has learned to publish only sure release dates and not something that might be changed. I'll just go tonight and hope to enjoy the movie.

Wow. The movie did a good job; afterall it was one of the most anticipated movies of the summer. But I thought the movie was a little choppy and I wish it was done a little bit better. It was good overall.

dominor, I'd recommend it. It's not the best film so far, IMO, but it might make you happy.. and sad.. and like you're back in the loop, which is always a nice feeling if said loop is the Harry Potter loop.

This film deserves all that money, really, even with the fact that WB postponed its premiere until July. Honestly. I just came from cinema, i watched it with my friends and we all absolutely loved it, also half of us had read the books, the other half hadn't so we can say that this film is for both readers and non-readers (which is great). My best friend's favorite book from the Harry Potter saga was HBP and he absolutely loved the film. This film really deserves all the money it has earned by now, really. I liked the fact that, once again, everything that mattered to the story and to the characters' development was kept intact and, if adapted, adapted very well and in an intelligent way. Well, it's not a brilliant 10/10 film but i'd give it at least 8/10 or 9/10. Can't wait for the last two. Really. And then again i'm SO GLAD that David Yates is directing them (on a random note, did anyone notice him in the first scene with the muggles? eheheh i didn't yet my best friend pointed it out to me).

Those are phenominal numbers and it's only going to grow from there.
Now that I've read the mixed reviews about the movie, I'm wondering if all the hype was worth it. Disappointments for all the things left out, praise for what WAS depicted, and more questions left unanswered as to how it will be tied into the ending.
I've heard that, for someone who has just seen the movies and not read the books, there are a lot of gaps and material that needs explaining. As the movies progress the continuity of the story line doesn't flow like it should.
I can't be a judge on this because I have read all the books.
Blessings! Hecate3fold!

The best movie?? What??? Did I see the same movie?
Come on... the main focus of the movie was the romantic sub-plots. The whole purpose of Dumbledore's lessons with Harry was missed; to give him insight on the workings of Voldemort's mind so he can track the Horcruxes. It seemed they just glossed over the lessons just so Harry could get the memory from Slughorn to know "Hey, I got to find me some Horcruxes"
Personally, I also found the relationship between Dumbledore and Harry to be a little distant as well. They have completely written out the Dursleys in the movie. Dumbledore just pops up and says that Harry won't be able to keep his date with a girl at a diner because he is taking him to the Weasleys. There is no confrontation between Dumbledore and Harry's biological family.
Neither is there any focus on what the other Horcruxes might be. This movie sets up for the last one. Harry knows what he is supposed to look for because of the insight he gains or is supposed to have gained in this movie. All he sees is Dumbledore's first meeting and Slughorn telling Voldy about Horcruxes. WHAT??? There is no instruction. Dumbledore never explains anything to Harry. He never tried to tell Riddle to return any of the stolen items in the orphanage scene or explain to Harry the significance of that behavior.
And then there is the bathroom fight with Draco. Draco didn't even try an Unforgivable. I mean, I can go on and on...
The flow of the movie felt "choppy" at times; some of the scenes didn't flow into each other. I guess there is only so much you can put in a two and half hour long movie.
At least with Star Trek, the delay was well worth it; they delayed to get a bigger audience (as they did for this movie) and improve the special effects. *THAT* was a thrill ride from beginning to end that payed homage to what came before. That movie also gave something to the fans and people who had never seen any Star Trek movies/TV shows before. How many fans noticed the Tribble?
You can make a huge movie that caters both to the fans and the people who have never seen the previous movies or read the books.
I know I am expecting too much. But I expected a lot out of Star Trek and came out satisfied.
Worst part of it all... When Deathly Hallows comes out I am going to see it. I suck.
I'll be glad when this financial gravy train is over.

There's always going to be people who are unsatisfied with the films. I can't help that these people fail to see the big picture sometimes. It did set up DH well enough and that's all that's required of HBP.
I think that HBP might just stop short of what OotP made, we shall see though :)

I agree with HeWhoHasAName I think there was too much left out and too much crap added in. Like the burning of the burrow. If the burrow really did burn up. Where did everybody get there closed and everyting afterwards. They probably would have been burnt. And something that serious shouldent be added in just for the fun of it.
Harry and Ginny had a few too romantic moments. And there kiss, too romantic of a momment and awkward at the same time, totaly staged. And Harry never broke up with her.
The lake scene, it seemed that Dumbledore was still aware of harrys presence the entire time when he was drinking the potion. Not to mention there was no explanation as to why the horcrux would be hidden there anyway.
No battle after dumbledores death. Kindove makes it anticlimatic, And why was Bellitrix there? just to destroy the great hall?
Not to mention the totaly obliteration of Dumbledores funeral. There was no morning time. There was just an abrut end in the astronony tower.
And what about the muggle girl in the very beginning? Harry doesnt go picking up dates with totaly strange girls! And he probably wouldent be reading the daily prophet in a muggle coffee shop either.
Harry never got detention for the Sectumcempra scene. He just walked away after snape got there.
And since when can death eaters just fly around and destroy things? Ill tell you when, Since NEVER!
There was basically no deep meaning or emotional parts. basically a deep emotional dark book turned into a romantic comedy.
