Yesterday, JK Rowling updated her site
to include a new link to 'The VOLANT Charitable Trust', which was set up by the author herself to distribute funds to appropriate charities.
The charity's website
states that its two main funding targets include Multiple Sclerosis research and also charities which aim to end social deprivation of women and children, both of which JK Rowling has been actively involved with for years.

It's great that she uses her fame to call attention to issues like that. It seems the trust is receiving a large number of applications already. And it's her handwriting, isn't it. Cool.

Sorry it's me again. Does anybody else have the feeling Volant has something to do with 'vol' as in Voldemort? Voldemort is supposed to mean 'flight from death' so volant should be something like, flying? Any ideas? Or any linguists lurking around?

Juicybit, the Volant Trust is named for JKR's mother... her maiden name was Ann Volant. She died of Multiple Sclerosis, that's why one of the charities the Trust focuses on is MS.

Bel~, thanks for the information. I didn't remember what her mother's name was, I do know she died of MS though.
I just want to add, because I mentioned Voldemort above, his name has been interpreted as 'flight from death' and also 'flight of death' which is not the same thing, but I'm pretty sure the French word 'voler' means 'to fly'.

Juicybit
Its real translation is "flight of death"
Vol (from voler) - to fly
de - of
Mor (from morte , i think) - death
Rather literal, isn't it =)

She's so good at giving to charities. That's so cool. C.S. Lewis gave 2/3 of his income to charity too, both great authors with a great view of life.

I wonder where the name "Volant" came from? I'm going to have to go to her site and see if there is an explanation of the meaning.
This is an outstanding way for her to distribute funds to those who deserve them.
Blessings! Hecate3fold!
