The book, part
of the Fine Printed Books including Children's & Illustrated Books auction, is just one lot of the series, which also includes a first edition of Chamber of Secrets and an uncorrected edition of Prisoner of Azkaban.
UPDATE: In an update
of this news, the above mentioned copy of the Philosopher's Stone sold for 4,000 pounds ($7,976.69) including fees.

Wow, that's a lot of money. I assume that these rare books will go up in value in the years to come, just like most investments. However, I think I would be too scared to read them, in case i ripped a page or spilt coffee on them.

Price seems a bit lower than I would have thought it would go for. My guess is that some of the hype may be wearing off for the books. Or the economy is not real good at the moment. Should rev up again in a few years.

I actually thought it would go for more than that...it really is an excellent investment, besides being an incredibly cool thing to have. It's one of the few items that have been up for auction that I think it makes sense to buy because its value will only increase. Besides, who wouldn't love to have that on display?!

I'm sure as a book collector you would love to get your hands on that!! I'm so into reading Harry Potter that I don't know that I would want that book..because I would't feel like I could touch it!! But, it would be pretty cool to have it in your collection!!

I think that they shouldn't sell those books. They should ask J.K Rowling what she wants to do with those books. Or maybe put them in a museum of Harry Potter stuff so everyone can see them.

If I had a first edition of any of those first few books there is no way I would ever sell it. It would become a family heirloom, and cherished forever.

4,000 pounds?! That sounds like a bargain to me as this will only increase in price in future auctions. Lucky, lucky winning bidder ... I wish that I had known of Harry Potter earlier as my book is a 2001 edition and worth NADA!!

For a first edition, that doesn't seem to be too bad a price. I wonder now how much the CoS and PoA will sell for. Didn't even know there was an uncorrected edition of PoA printed.

Ohhh... a little under expectations? Well that is still an incredible amount of money to me. But I'll stick to my inexpensive versions of the books because I read them so much they wear out and I'd be to nervous to take the dust jacket off an $8,000 book!
