Earlier this morning the cover art for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was revealed on the 'Today Show.' Both Bloomsbury and Scholastic web sites have been updated with the art.
You can see the British covers here
and a large image of the adult version here
.
The cover illustration for thechildren's edition is by Jason Cockcroft, who drew the cover illustrations for the previous two Harry Potter books: Harry Potter and the Order of the PHoenix and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The cover design for the adult edition is from a photograph by Michael Wildsmith, who has photographed all the adult edition jackets.
The inside flap of the British children's edition reads:
Harry has been burdened with a dark, dangerous and seemingly impossible task: that of locating and destroying Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes. Never has Harry felt so alone, or faced a future so full of shadows. But Harry must somehow find within himself the strength to complete the task he has been given. He must leave the warmth, safety, and companionship of The Burrow and follow without fear or hesitation the inexorable path laid out for him!
In this final, seventh installment of the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling unveils in spectactular fashion the answers to the many questions that have been so eagerly awaited. The spellbinding, richly woven narrative, which plunges, twists and turns at a breathtaking pace, confirms the author as a mistress of storytelling, whose books will be read, reread and read again.
The back of the adult edition reads:
Harry is waiting in Privet Drive. The Order of the Phoenix is coming to escort him safely away without Voldemort and his supporters knowing if they can. But what will Harry do then? How can he fulfil the momentous and seemingly impossible task that Professor Dumbledore has left him with?
Scholastic has an interactive version of the cover here
.
According to Scholastic’s
Vice President and Creative Director, David Saylor (who has designed all the covers):
The front cover of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows features a dramatic sky of oranges and golds. It depicts 17-year-old Harry with arm outstretched, reaching upward. The structures around Harry show evident destruction and in the shadows behind him, we see outlines of other people.
For the first time the cover is a wrap-around. On the back cover spidery hands are outstretched towards Harry. Only when the book is opened does one see a powerful image of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, his glowing red eyes peering out from his hood.
You can view the reveal of the cover here
(Quicktime) or download here
(Windows Media, remember to right click & save target as ...). You can now also watch the video on the MSNBC web site
, thanks Hannah.
Canadian publishers, Raincoast Books, have updated
their web site with the artwork as well as options for pre-ordering the book.
You can see all the covers here
in our gallery.
UPDATE: CBBCNewsround reports
that the British version of Deathly Hallows will be 608 pages long, the second longest after Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Yes! Finally, a name with a face! It's not the first "wrap around" cover though, if I remember correctly. I OotP was wrap around, too.
But, somebody tell me, why is his robe brown? And who are all those people in the background? Is the defeat of Voldemort a public battle?

SO I heard from the bathroom the words "HARRY POTTER" and I immediatly ran to my TV. If it's good enough to be on the Today show, well then it's big news.
I really love the Scholastic version of the cover and the Bloomsbury adult covers. I think the kids Bloomsbury has too much on it. I like the simplicity of the other two. This book is bound to be great!

Very curious...
The kid's UK cover it actually looks like they are being drawn into the archway - judging by their hair. Maybe, but then again Hermione's sleeves are up her arms so maybe they are flying out.
And I think that elf is either Kreacher or Dobby. This morning, I'm leaning towards Kreacher, but only because his colouring - I can't remember the descriptions from the book of dobby's colour.
I do think the Deathly Hallows are accessible via the veil in the Ministry of Magic, and that is where they go through before the final battle with Voldemort.
The picture of Hogwarts half covered in snow, while other parts are in the sun with green lawn struck me as odd, and that has to be significant.

Wow, the British children's cover is definitely the most amazing and most interesting cover of all the books. When I get it, I'll spend a really long time looking at it.
Hey, I just noticed an elf or something holding onto the sword. At first, I thought it was Ron who was holding it but then I saw the long, pointy ear. Maybe the sword is Godric Gryffindor's, and maybe the elf is Dobby? Ahhh, this makes me want to read the book even more than before!

Wow! I really like the last cover. It's bright, and I really like the scene. Looks like tehe last battle with Voldemort (I see some spectators too).
The covers have really changed (I think improved) compared to the first couple.
I wonder what Harry's about to grab in the air? Time to speculate!

I honestly never knew there were different versions of the book. Has there always been a children's version and an adult version of the book. Is the book itself different or just the cover art?

Why is the British version 176 pages shorter than the American version? Are the pages bigger in the British Version, thus holding more text per page?
