Henrik Wann Jensen
, a University of California, San Diego professor, will accept a technical achievement award from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences
on Feb. 14.
Jensen and two others were responsible for technology that helped make the lighting on Dobby's face look more convincing in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. They will be honored for realistically digitizing the effects of light below translucent surfaces like skin.
Before their breakthrough, computer graphics produced images of human faces that appeared too hard.
"That is why the early successes in digital animation, such as Jurassic Park and Toy Story, featured primarily non-human characters," Jensen said.
Recent movies, such as Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Terminator 3 have been able to use digital images with Jensen's technology to create realistic-looking skin.
The team's technology will also be used in the next generation of videogame consoles in 2006.

Thats cool that their winning an award for that. i didn't think there was an award for things like that. and yes i'm also surprised that its an american and not a brit that came up with that. i figured that the crew would also be predominately english.

I believe they are getting the award for the lighting process used in creating not just Dobby but any computer generated images which use the process. So the award is not specifically for Dobby but for the process. Well done anyhow. I wonder if something similar was used in making Gollum so realistic.

Dobby was very life like and I am glad to see that the artists responsible are being recognized for their hard work! They did such a great job with him, I am curious to see how they do with Winky and some of the other special effects in upcoming movies (POA and GOF).

Since Dobby was one of the most realistic CGI in history, I find it advisable that the person behind the work be accredited. He did a great job on Dobby, and I hope he is also responsible for Winky, Kreacher, and all the other house-elves in Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix.

Ofcourse my skin won, I always take good care of it! What do yall mean, animated? You mean, I'm not real? Just made on a computer? Is that why I'm always online? *goes to a corner and sobs* Well, if i'm not real, how am i sitting in this chair? It must be a muggle cover up to say that there is no such thing as magic! Whats next, there's no such thing as Harry Potter? *giggles at the thought* You silly muggles.

I don't think the guy actually worked on the Harry Potter movies, rather, the algorithm that he developed to create realistic sub surface scattering was used on the characters. The same algorithm has been used in other movies, for example, in a scene in Shrek there is a glass of milk, and that milk was shaded with this algorithm to make it very realistic (in the CG community this was a very big deal a few years ago, and there were many articles on this glass of milk)

Well, I never really sat around and thought about Dobby's "skin", but now that you mention it, it does look very realistic. It's so cool what people can do with compter animation, graphics and such. I wish I could do that kind of stuff. Maybe when I grow up! :?)

Dobby was pretty cool. He DOES look pretty realistic now that I think about it. I kinda expected his skin to look a little less reptile-ish, though.
