While the megaseller Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix failed to create as much of a noticeable ripple in the publishing industry as it did with the four before it, it is, yet again, opening doors and helping out its crafters in another, related way. Among other books, Phoenix is rapidly opening the door
to Spanish readers, encouraging major book chains to offer more foreign-friendly services.
The Spanish-language segment, however, may be opening a new chapter for the industry. Although hard numbers are hard to come by in the closed book world, those in the trade agree that the market is expanding rapidly.
"The industry has grown enormously in the last five years," said Karin N. Kiser, a Spanish-language book industry consultant in San Diego. "Borders has been doing this for a long time."
...According to trade journal CrÃticas, the number of titles available in Spanish has boomed to about 30,000 from 5,000 just two years ago.
"Up until now, books in Spanish have been tremendously difficult to buy in the United States, even though so many people in this country prefer reading books in Spanish," said Jorge Ramos, the Univisión news anchor who is also a bestselling author.

It's really great. Spanish is second most spoken language in the world. I wonder why it has taken so to translate. Spanish-speaking kids and adults will now be very happy and start this magical journey with OoTP.

wow... Unfurtunately the spansih edition is comming till next year (but fans transalted it in 1 week).
I also didn't know that there was a Barnes and Noble Spanish section. My antvie languega is spanish, I'm fluent in English and like to read things in their original languages. FOr example I prefer Harry Potter in English, Don Quijote in Spanish.

It's cool that publishers are bridging the language gap. Perhaps this will encourage readers to learn new languages so that they can read from a different point of view. Every time I reread a book, I learn something new, so I can only imagine doing it in more than one language.

Hmmm, I didn't really understand that first sentence, because it says that OotP didn't sell as well as the other four...O well, I'm glad that they've finally got it out in Spanish, poor things.

I am surprised they say that Phoenix isn't making as big an impact on the "publishing world." I don't know about any of you, but I noticed one heck of a lot more hype on Phoenix than on Goblet of Fire.

Fred and/or George says:
Not to be rude, James, but the first sentence is broad and more than a little misleading. The publishing industry (i.e., Scholastic, Bloomsbury, etc.) was depending on the release of the fifth book, and it certainly wasn't disappointed by its sales. The retail industry may have been hoping for more, but not so much in sales figures for Harry Potter as in coincidental sales resulting from the increase in store/online traffic. Millions of copies were sold at or below cost by many large retailers--Amazon and Barnes & Noble certainly weren't looking to make their profit from the sales of the book itself. It did increase cash flow and store traffic, but it would take months to even begin to measure the effect that one book had on the industry as a whole. If anyone could say they have any gripes, it would have to be the independant book seller trying to push the books at retail price--not even Harry can save them from the big bad wolves.
