This family of shelled mammals appears to be headed to becoming the world's most famous
of its species:
Nine-month-old armadillo Dillon, whose dad appeared in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, is now the main attraction of an Edinburgh Zoo display called Animal Antics.
In JK Rowling’s spellbinding story, armadillo bile is a key ingredient for making wit-sharpening potion, a potent concoction that makes its drinker wittier, funnier and cleverer. To make the potion, students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry must crush scarab beetles into powder, thinly slice some ginger roots and put both into cauldron with armadillo bile, simmering for approximately half an hour. Jay Gunn, senior animal presenter at Edinburgh Zoo, said: "Armadillos are the only mammals with shells."

Very cute!
Sometimes I could really do with a wit-sharpening potion. Would have problems to use some of the "ingredients" in potion-making, though (snakes,spiders...) but if there are good results, well, why not???
To Slytherin_Punk88, who doesn' t pay attention to potions because of Snape: Hey, you are in Slytherin? Where's your problem, then? :)

It is interesting to read some of the ingredients of the potions used in the books. There's some really yucky stuff there. Wouldn't it be cool if some of them really worked?

Where do you get the snake idea? Some of you mentioned a snake, but armadillos are small shelled mammals. You know, warm blooded creatures?

I wonder if armadillos make good pets; they are basically rats with shells on them.

Choralee says:
Armadillos are mammals - not reptiles - so all of you talking about snakes need to reread the article! And look at the picture.
The actual armadillo is not used in the potion - just the bile extracted from the armadillo. I, too, would have a problem chopping up a cute little creature to get a potion ingredient.
Armadillos do not make good pets - they are smelly and eat a whole ton of bugs. Unless you like handling small creepy things for dinner...
I believe Snape makes a great potions master at Hogwarts. He is very detailed, extremely precise in his speech as well as highly organised. The only concern I have is that deplorable attitude of his...

Prof. Andaxia Moonstar says:
I don't believe most of the animals used in potions are alive at the time. I remember it was mentioned in COS how Ron was fine in Potions classes because the spiders were dead; he was only afraid of living ones.
Actually, I do notice the potion ingredients used. *shrug* Of course, I have a HP character who becomes a Potions Master, so it makes sense that she would pay attention to the ingredients. And I do agree with Choralee's assessment of Snape (of course, I am a huge Snape fan). And yes, it would be very cool if some of those potions actually worked - however, being mere Muggles, we won't be able to even find half of those ingredients.

HarrysGran says:
After reading about the potion ingredients I forget half of them, I have to admit. But that's because I'm no English and I would have to look up all the stuff. And for this I'm too lazy... And of course unpatient, have to go on with the story.
I too think the animals used in the potions are dead. But if they died a natural death, I wonder... Maybe Snape scared them to death before every lesson with his greasy hair. :-)
