Discussion: The 'Phoenix' files Popular (22680)

So, you've read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and pretty darn quick, too. Like many others around the world, you have a sore neck and strained eyes, the result of reading an 870-page book in two or three days. Now you want to share your arduous journey with others. This is the place to do it.

First I'll offer my own thoughts (LET THE SPOILERS BEGIN).

One word: WOW. And I thought the Dursleys were mean. As I'm thinking of where to begin talking about Order of the Phoenix, the one thing that keeps coming to the forefront of my mind is the book's grave look into the corruption and abuse of power (and vice-versa, the power of abuse and corruption). Whether found in the annals of history or safely between the book covers of children's fiction, it can be accurately restated that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

More on that later, but first, the death: How many of you were right? Raise your hands. Sirius was definitely on my short-list. When JK said a major character was going to die, I knew it wouldn't be any of the trio, I thought it might be an older Weasley, but then my thoughts turned to Sirius. He was given to Harry, so how painful could it be to have him taken away? That was my reasoning, anyway.

Is Cho finally "over-and-out"? Will the Weasley twins' business continue to succeed? Does the Ministry now understand how much it needs Dumbledore?

UPDATE: We now have a full-fledged forum available. Click here to start using it!

Q: What will happen to the content here?

A: Everything will be saved. In fact, I'd like recommendations on what to do with all the great posts here. Can we move some of it into the new forum? Just link back to it? Let me know (just mention my name, Cheeser, in any post).

Q: I don't like change! Waaaa!

A: That's not a question, but I understand. The new system is capable of so much more, including separate threads so people can have detailed conversations about certain aspects of the book. You can still have a free-for-all thread, too. It's your forum! Do whatever you want with it.

as far as Petunia being a squib, I tend to doubt that. She may no more than she lets on but that doesn't make her any more magical (or any more likeable for that matter). As far as Dudley getting magic - boy that would be a twist now wouldn't it, for him to be suddenly thrust into Harry's world. But if Dudley had any magic in him wouldn't he have been able to see the dementor?

greenbacker- I think you are right about draco...he is a slytherin after all and he may care more about his own reputation than his relationship with Lucius

I can see Draco turning against his father if he has enough sense. The whole moral of the book may end up having to do with unity and equality (hence what George Can'tStandYa has been trying to explain to us) The best thing that would help unify the book would be Draco turning good and helping defeat Voldemort.. You know what? I think JKR might just kill everybody off in the end. Kinda like the end of Hamelt there's a big battle and everyone just dies!

Don't take that seriously, it just came out of my head

Hagrid's father was a wizard, he might have had money. Since Hagrid being living on the grounds of Hogwart's and
collecting a salary, he might have saved up some money. He has being doing it for 50 years.

Regarding, Ron's owl, SB said it was the only owl willing
to take his message. Whether he paid for the owl is open to speculation. Plus later remember he used some unusual birds that Harry thought were from the Tropics.

I know DD believes in second chances, but this list really believes in magical personality changes. Dudley and Draco
becoming good. I could see some change in Aunt Petunia. She did take Harry in to protect him from Voldemort, so I feel there could a spark of love for her sister and her child. Her rants against Lily could just be jealousy since
she does not have magic powers.

Hi everyone! I could see Petunia being nicer to Harry on DD's instructions, but Dudley will probably be worse if anything, because of the dementor attacks. I wonder what Dudley saw that was so horrible?

The only people that now qualify as captain are the two beaters, Ron, and Ginny.

x WaddiWasi x - I think Harry will be captain. Now that Umbridge is gone, he'll more than likely be put back on the team.. and he's the best seeker ever so he'd probably be captain.

had another thought about the Draco/Harry thing. What if instead of Draco becoming good - Harry becomes bad. Harry was really angry all throughout OoP, which I took as a sign of the linkage between him and V. Of course Harry would never join V, but maybe his thirst to destroy V will send him over the edge.

Waddi Wasi says:

Yeah, me too. By the way, sorry to enter the conversation so late. I know Petunia has to know a ot of things about magic. Lily and James must have spent a lot of time with her, because she knew about the dementors.

Kadyak says:

Hi GirlieGirl.

Regarding Hagrid learning magic:

"Strictly speaking, I'm not allowed to do magic," says Hagrid the night he fetches Harry. His wand was snapped and he was expelled. He never had the opportunity to advance. He clearly can do some magic; he lights the fire in the grate on the island that same night.

Regarding Draco - He might pretend to be good, but he never can be - not unless something happens to him. His mind is too filled with the darkness he has inherited. He won't just wake up one morning and say, "My dad's a git, I'm going to join DD." It just isn't going to happen. Only if DD or Harry saved his life at a moment when the threat of death was looming over him, terrifying him, might he actually repent.

I don't think Harry would ever turn bad permanently, but maybe he'll get confused for a while. I could see V punishing Lucious Malfoy for his failure to get the phrophecy which would maybe sway Draco away from the dark side. Maybe they would "meet in the middle"

I'll have to pick up this conversation again on Monday, - have a good weekend.

Kadyak says:

Dudley learn magic? Highly unlikely. First of all, he showed no evidence of perceiving anything other than darkness and cold when the dementor came at him. He was, for the lack of any other evidence, convinced that it was Harry doing something to him.

Secondly, the way he throws temper tantrums, you'd think he'd have performed magic by accident.

Thirdly, if he were at all magical, he would have been inscribed in Hogwarts' at birth and admitted along with Harry, no matter how much of a git he is.
